"Referrals lost, uncontactable department"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Medical Imaging

(as the patient),

I have been in a great deal of pain for some time suffering from Plantar Facilitis. I made an appointment to see a GP who referred me to the Kalgoorlie X-ray department for an ultrasound.

I waited and waited for the department to contact me, when no-one contacted me I tried calling but phones never answered. I tried calling the hospital themselves and they kindly tried to put me through but still my calls went unanswered. I then located an email address and it wasn't until I sent an email (which wasn't answered directly) that I got a call and an appointment for the scan. After having the scan done and going back to the GP I was given another referral to have a cortisone injection done. I'm still waiting on a phone call / appointment over a month later. I have run out of prescribed pain killers, I can barely walk. I have continuously tried calling, emailing and trying any way I can to get in contact but just get ignored.

I can't just drop everything and attend the department every day to try and get a response. I feel it simply isn't good enough that the residents and surrounds don't have a decent healthcare facility they can rely on. I have read the other similar stories on this site and the repeated response of we are trying to fix it but I believe these complaints go back months and months with promises made and yet right up until now it seems the problems still exist. In my opinion, stop with the politics and just do something about it, answer the phone for starters and have better control over answering / responding to email.

We are all busy people but that is no excuse for such basic failings and I feel would not be accepted in the private sector, why should it be allowed to continue in the public sector that we as tax payers all pay for.

Dear footloose,

Thank you for reaching out. I can understand that living in pain with an illness or injury must be terrible. It also must be very frustrating, when you have followed the doctor’s instructions and are waiting on contact from our team to make arrangements for this specialised service.

As you have identified there have been significant challenges in our Medical Imaging Department, with challenges in both the clinical and administration staffing in recent times. I am very sorry this has impacted you and other members of the Goldfields in accessing these services.

As a result of feedback such as yours, we are targeting improvements in this area. These include significant recruitment drives to stabilise the staffing within the department, providing further training and support to the staff in this area and working to implement a new electronic system to manage referrals so they can be accessed immediately upon a patient’s presentation to, or contact with the department. I hope you will see the evidence of this improvement if you or your family need to use this service again in the future.

If you have any further issues, please do not hesitate to contact me on either 908 5817 or via email Alicia.Michalanney@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards,

Alicia Michalanney
Director Kalgoorlie Health Campus
