"My elderly parent going to casualty."

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My sibling and I took our elderly parent to casualty recently in excruciating pain in their back to the point that even the car movement made the pain even worse. Our parent is already very unsteady on their feet, so we had a fear of them falling and having the pain could make them even more unsteady.

We got our parent in to see the doctor; they gave painkillers which eased the pain slightly, but every movement was sharp pain again. I asked for an MRI and more investigation.

I was told to take our parent home, call the doctor the next day to organise our MRI. I’m thinking we have to move them from the hospital to the car, back in bed, then back to the doctor the next day, then back in the car, then wait for the appointment for MRI to be done 4 days later. By that time no painkiller or anti-inflammatory was cutting the pain, they were still in bad pain. I’m disgusted if this is how the elderly get treated, shame on you. We pay top health cover, which seems to me to obviously mean nothing, and being elderly still doesn’t mean anything. Makes us very sad.

Dear veladw97

I am sorry to hear that you were not happy with the quality of service that your elderly parent received at Bunbury Hospital Emergency Department.

This is not the level or quality of service that we aim to provide.

The Emergency Department and Bunbury Hospital takes your feedback very seriously.

We are keen to know more about your experience so that we can improve the way we deliver care.

In order for us to review the concerns raised, I would appreciate it if you could contact our customer service officer Janet on 9722 1510, to provide us with your parent’s details so that we can review the care provided, with a view to implementing improvements.

We will need consent from your elderly parent or their next of kin/guardian in order to undertake a review and also to allow us to provide you with the details of our findings and actions taken.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback via Patient Opinion. You have provided us with an opportunity to improve the service we provide.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr Adam Coulson

Director of Emergency Medicine

Hi Dr Adam, Thank you for your response.

I will contact the service officer when I get a chance. It’s crazy atm trying to get mum some one-on-one care as we have just received the results of the MRI and they are worse than expected..

Will be in touch soon once we get mum settled

Dear veladw97

I am sorry to hear that your mother has required admission to hospital.

She is in the right place, as the SARU staff are well experienced in caring for older patients who require rehabilitation support.

I have asked Nik Booker the Acting Coordinator of Nursing and Midwifery, to visit SARU to talk with you and your family today.

I have also asked for your mum's care in the Emergency Department to be reviewed

Yours sincerely
