Birth options in Broome

(as the patient),

I am currently pregnant with my first child and am excited to be accepted in and already working with the fantastic midwives in the Broome Midwifery Program. I am very pleased with this service and am comforted by their high level of expertise and diligence.

In reviewing my options for birth in Broome, I am confused to learn that a birthing pool / water birth is not currently offered and my only similar option is a bathtub. 

With a recognised and celebrated program such as the BMP, why would this team not be able to provide what seems to be recognised by most in this industry as an accepted practice / option? 
While I’m uncertain as to how I’ll give birth, given my inexperience, I’m disappointed to hear that in my current location I’m deprived of standard birthing options.

Thank you for your feedback on birthing options in Broome. I am pleased to hear of your positive experiences with the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) program, and will be certain to pass these commendations on to the midwives in that team.

Regarding your queries about the options for water-birth, we are in the final stages of finalising the policy and practice requirements for such a service in Broome. As you can imagine, the safety of the mother and infant in all birth situations is paramount, and we need to ensure this happens with a newly introduced service like water-births. There is staff education and policy awareness currently being undertaken to facilitate this.

I am confident that water-births as an option for birthing mothers and their partners will occur in Broome in the future. I apologise if this is not possible by the time you are ready to deliver, but hope that the other options available through our programs make your experience memorable.

I wish you all the best for the remainder of your pregnancy, and also for the birth of your first child.
