"Hygiene Standards at Blood Collection Centres"

About: PathWest Joondalup Collection Centre

(as the patient),

This morning I presented myself at Joondalup Blood Collection Centre for a blood sample extraction

This woman had dropped the venal apparatus onto the floor and she was about to use it on me; I said - Did you just drop that? Then she proceeded to show me the protective sleeve that was still on; I was still shocked then, and then she hesitated and asked if I wanted another one. I replied - Yes, please. The blood-letting procedure was completed.

I left the premises disgusted to how she handled the situation.

She wears gloves to protect herself but I am not being protected by her.

In my opinion, her hygiene practices are unacceptable and furthermore she did not dispose of the dropped apparatus appropriately whilst I was still in the room.

Dear Toppa

On behalf of PathWest, I would like to express my regret that the health care that was provided to you concerning the level of service and hygiene practices displayed by the collector at our PathWest Joondalup Collection Centre, did not meet your expectations.

Following your feedback the staff member has been provided with education in relation to the appropriate policies and procedures regarding infection control, including hygiene practices and disposal of specimen collection apparatus.

PathWest has a commitment to excellence in all aspects of our service, and we believe that ongoing education is essential to our success, which is why it is important that we get feedback about our service. I very much appreciate that you took the time and effort to let us know about your experience.

Please contact Elaine Toogood, Manager of Specimen Collection Services, on 6457 4514 if you wish to discuss further.

Kind regards,

Frances Brogden
