"My relative with dementia"

About: Estia Health Melton South

(as a relative),

When we first went to the nursing home, it had a feel of being very homely, comfortable and clean. The staff where great and going above and beyond their job description. After a year, changes where being made. These changes were not good ones, they included reduced nursing staff on the floor, doctors visiting at midnight, brighter lighting, no more outings and reduced activities programs etc. In my opinion, the food is also horrible and I wouldn't feed it to my dog. I felt the staff are very under trained in dealing with patients with dementia, wherein 6 months my relative was sent to GEM (geriatric evaluation management) unit because they were unable to redirect him before he got so upset and scared that he would lock himself in his room. I feel there is also no communication from management when we came to them with concerns and staff were underappreciated which I believe made the patients suffer. In my view, this is not a secure dementia unit and needs to be re-assessed and fixed before they can care for dementia patients.
