"Bedside manner of ED staff"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Our family has attended the ED on several occasions in the past month or so...everyone has commented on the sheer arrogance of the staff upon arrival. I had heard several of these communications and walk away feeling as though it’s a crime to be ill or hurt because it seems these nurses obviously don’t like their jobs and take it out on patients. I had to take my sister there...she had hurt her ankle (broken), was in shock and distressed...required a wheel chair... The nurse who came out to the car, in my opinion had no bedside manner, was unfriendly and was disrespectful. She refused to move my sister from the car and it was impossible for her to get out onto the wheelchair. The nurses comment was it’s only a broken ankle isn’t it, she can do it herself! I could not believe the attitude or tone of this nurse. My sister was crying out in pain... I picked her up and put her in the wheel chair saying someone needs to help her ! The nurse being offended about my helping then said sharply I am not allowed to lift her. My reply was of course not! The nurse then stated to a fellow nurse - she is not coming in ... I will make her wait in the waiting room ! Which she did. My sister was highly distressed and had prior asked that I stay with her.

I have visited Bunbury St John’s, Mount Hospital and Fiona Stanley taking people to emergency over the past few weeks and have not had to endure, what I believe is such disgusting behaviour. The offensive attitudes at the Busselton Hospital make me question - Firstly why are these people in helping professions yet have no patient care and secondly this is an ongoing issue at the Busselton Health Campus. Sadly, again the few nurses with distasteful attitudes build a bad reputation for all others !

Dear velazp83,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback on the experiences you and your family have had when accessing Busselton Hospital Emergency Department. It is disappointing to hear that you haven’t felt supported and obviously the staff attitudes you describe are unacceptable. I would like to personally apologise for the distress caused and would really appreciate an opportunity to speak with you so I can investigate your concerns and follow up with the individual staff. We are keen to look at some training and development for staff and insights such as yours are invaluable in guiding this. If you can, please call me on 9753 6372 or meet with me I would be very grateful,

Warm regards,

Daniel Anderson
