"Lack of security presence"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Security

(as a friend),

I attended the ED with my partner one day on a weekend. Whilst sitting in the waiting room, I saw a man start yelling and harassing a mother and her young child from across the waiting room, for no apparent reason, who were using the bathroom. I overheard the staff at the front desk call security to remove the man. Not long after that a security officer came in, spoke to the staff and then walked back to his office. Again, I saw the man slamming the toilet door and making loud noises inside the toilet, and again I saw the staff contact security. I'm concerned about the inactivity of the security staff, my safety and the safety of others in the waiting room. Clearly there was a concern that this man was being disruptive and even after repeated calls from the staff at the front desk, nothing really happened. He eventually walked out himself, so I assume he was not a patient waiting to see a doctor.

Dear Concerned bystander

Thank you for relaying your concerns over the security of patients and carers in the Emergency Department. Your experience sounds quite confronting for you and the other people in the waiting room. I am concerned by your description of the securities management of the man’s disruptive behaviour. Your feedback has been directed to the Security Manager who is investigating with the security staff who worked on the weekend. Your feedback is very valuable as it allows us an opportunity to reflect on the services we provide and for an opportunity in improvement.

Kind regards

Jennie
