"The care of my husband"

About: Bentley Hospital / Older Adult & Falls & Memory Clinics & Day Therapy Unit Rockingham General Hospital / Adult and Older Adult Inpatient Mental Health Unit (Closed and Open) Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My husband who has dementia and memory loss, was admitted into Rockingham Hospital to adjust his medication. I felt like all they wanted me to do was put him in a nursing home. It took 6 months going through Rockingham and getting nowhere, to only go to Bentley Mental Health Unit once and got what we wanted. Which was a change of medication to keep my husband at home and going into respite when needed. In my opinion, this was opposed to Rockingham Hospital who seemed to want to put him straight into a nursing home. My husband was left with bruises all up his arms at Rockingham, while at Bentley there wasn't any.

I felt like Bentley treated all of us, plus my husband as there priority, like all hospitals should do.

Dear delphinusxm73

I was very disappointed to hear about you and your husbands experience in Rockingham General Hospital. Providing care to patients during such a vulnerable time of their life is an extremely valuable privilege and we expect that staff provide patients and their family the utmost respect, dignity and support during what can be a distressing and confronting time. I would like to sincerely apologise for this experience and any additional distress caused during what I am sure was an already difficult time. I would like to offer you the opportunity to contact me directly on 9599 4331 in order to discuss the issues further and to work with you on improvements we can make in caring for patients with dementia.

Thank you for your feedback and I look forward to talking with you.

Kath
