"Meckel's diverticulitis diagnosis and medical certificate"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as the patient),

After many years presenting at EDs in WA with appendicitis-like symptoms, one surgeon finally bothered to investigate thoroughly & located a Meckel's diverticulum recently at Fiona Stanley Hospital, which was of stomach tissue and causing me a lot of grief and pain. I would like to wholeheartedly acknowledge her for this - she is an angel. Not only did she find it, but instead of going ahead and resecting my bowel to remove it, she sought advice from a senior to her and together they found they could remove the pouch and staple. That action in itself - seeking advice - saved me additional recovery issues. I am forever indebted to this surgeon and would like her actions to be acknowledged.

I am also wanting to make a strong complaint regarding a medical officer. Despite the surgeon on rotation telling me that I required 7-10 days off work and they would organise a medical certificate for me (I work full-time), this particular medical officer took it upon themselves to give me a certificate for 2 days from discharge. Despite the nurse in transit lounge communicating with the medical officer that my Meckel's required bowel surgery and is not normal diverticulitis, and the surgeon had told me 7-10 days, they refused to acknowledge the error of their ways. Their actions caused me great distress whilst being discharged from emergency bowel surgery - unnecessary stress at a time when stress should have been minimised. Their actions require addressing and I believe they need to be disciplined and held accountable.

Dear augustbp66

I was glad to hear of your successful surgical intervention. I was particularly pleased to hear of the tenacity of the surgeon who provided you with your diagnosis and her willingness to consult with her colleagues on the best surgical intervention. These are skills that we value highly.

Regarding the stress you encountered obtaining a medical certificate, unfortunately without your details I am unable to investigate why this occurred. I encourage you to contact the Fiona Stanley Hospital Patient Family Liaison Service via phone 6152 4013 or email FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au so that we can better understand the issues that you experienced and help us to continue to improve our care by addressing these issues with the relevant staff.

Thank you once again for your kind comments.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari
