"Birthing options"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

Although I am completely satisfied with the service from the MGP team at Broome Hospital, I am deeply disappointed at the fact no birth pool option is available, even if the parents are willing to provide their own birthing pool and supplies.

All the midwives are trained in water birthing and the evidence of pain relief provided by water birthing is heavily documented in the current research and may enable more mothers to strive for a natural birth experience.

If parents are willing to provide their own birth pool and accessories I don't see why Broome Hospital would continue to prevent this becoming an option. It is available in Hedland and Karratha, why not Broome?

Dear velany83

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I acknowledge your disappointment in the inability of the health service to support you with a water birthing option. You are quite right, many of our midwives have undertaken the training necessary to support water birthing, however, the physical space and infrastructure of the birth suite at Broome Hospital is not currently at a standard that would ensure your safety or that of our staff - and safety is of paramount importance to us. Remodelling the birthing suite at the Hospital to accommodate safe water birthing as per WA Health policy is on our infrastructure priority list however there are no immediate plans for modifications given the many competing Kimberley priorities at present. I am fully committed to supporting the preferences of birthing mothers in the Region and helping our exceptional midwives to provide their clients an exemplary obstetric service. As such, I will continue advocating for birth suite infrastructure improvements to be prioritised.

I am sorry the birth suite modifications required to ensure safety has meant this option was not available to you. Please feel free to contact me personally if you would like to discuss this further via phone 08) 9195 2450 or via email carmen.morgan@heath.wa.gov.au.

I extend my very best wishes to you and your family at this special time.

Kind regards

Carmen Morgan
