"Fibreglass cast removal"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

In my opinion, the nurse was incorrectly trained on the use of the plaster/fibreglass cast cutting tool, and very insensitive and rude.

My leg was badly burnt and cut up the sides and along the ankle.
When my leg jolted due to the pain, instead of an apology I was reprimanded for sudden movement that put her in danger. She said, these things don't cut you, and was surprised to see my cuts bleeding underneath once the cast was removed.
Now I may have scars and possible infection.

Dear authenticsq68,

I was disappointed to read your story about your experience when you attended the Emergency Department. This is not the patient experience and or the care that I would expect our health professionals to deliver and wish to apologise. I have shared your concerns with the Emergency Department Team so that they are aware of the impact of your treatment whist removing the cast and how you felt as a result of the care you received.

So that we can better understand the issues you have raised and continue to improve our service, we are happy to investigate the matter in more detail. Please contact the Fiona Stanley Family Liaison Service via phone 6152 4013 or email FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au if you would like this to occur.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari

Update posted by authenticsq68 (the patient)

Hello Janet

The cast removal was performed in the Level 4 orthopaedic section not the emergency.

The usual cast maker/cutter was excellent, as with the new lady from the eastern states. However, on the day of my removal I had someone ill suited to the position.

Regards

authenticsq68
