"This facility is extremely under staffed"

About: Oberon Village

(as a service user),

Both my parents were residents in this facility. The facility is extremely under staffed. The night my dad passed away I spoke with the RN on duty who informed me she was the only RN on and that she was a new graduate nurse. I had to ask her to please give my dad some glycopyrolate (a medication to help with secretions). She admitted she had never heard of such a medication. My dad passed away in this facility with no access to palliative care even though this service is advertised in the brochure.

We are sorry that you experienced this situation.

I'd like to give you the comfort of advising that Columbia Aged Care has Registered Nurses at all its facilities 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Our roster is set to meet the assessed care needs of our residents, every day. The Australian Aged Care Quality Agency assessing our rosters on an ongoing basis to ensure we appropriately staff our facilities. We have been assessed as providing both the correct number and mix of staff within our facilities.

As always, if you have concerns regarding the operations within the facility, please meet with the Facility Manager to discuss your concerns.

You are correct in saying you have registered nurses 24/7. The problem is there was only one registered nurse covering the facility and some of them were new graduate nurses with very little experience. My dad was dying and was lucky if he weighed 45kg and an RN wanted to give him an intramuscular injection of glycopyrrolate. I believe a most inappropriate route for an injection for a palliative care patient. Also she had no idea what glycopyrrolate was. In my opinion, Columbia Nursing home at Oberon was very under staffed by under skilled nurses.
