All eyes were focused on Dad, which was obviously just fine, but he's not the best at English. Some things he didn't know how to explain to staff so I tried explaining for him but it seemed as though they were ignoring me as I wasn't at all acknowledged. When I was acknowledged, it was by a nurse who asked if I was going home soon. It was midnight. I wasn't told by anyone that I couldn't stay so I assumed I could. I told the nurse that I planned to stay the night with my dad. They said why in a judgemental manner. I asked why not. Then all the nurse said was that family members don't usually stay the night, then left us. It got to 3am and I wasn't offered so much as a pillow or blanket. I slept a total of an half an hour on a hard chair, resting my head on dad's bed.
I am a paramedicine and nursing student and I found this behaviour by staff towards family members of a patient absolutely appalling, or was it just me they were being like this towards? Communication between patient AND family members is one of the first things we learn in first year nursing. Listening to family members, especially if the patient's first language isn't English, is paramount to a quick recovery for the patient. The way I was ignored the whole night after treating and monitoring my dad was finished, I found disgusting.
