"Lack of XMAS spirit on the ward"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Acute Surgical Ward 6G

(as a relative),

Xmas day - my husband is a patient at Royal Perth Hospital.

The nurses are absolutely amazing caring people, but the food was disgusting.

It was just as bad as every other day.

I felt that there was no effort to make the patients feel that it was Xmas day, except a tiny chocolate on the tray.

No special breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Morning tea there was a fruit mince pie, big deal, or dry turkey was one option, not even a pudding or cake.

It was the most disgusting things I have seen. Yes, it's a public hospital, but come on, in my opinion, my dogs ate better.

We are paying to stay there using our private health, as our surgeon had to operate urgently.

A lot more could and should have been done for Xmas. It's not like the catering staff were not aware it was happening.

Lift your game; you're treating very vulnerable sick people.

Dear skyfw97

I’m sorry to hear your husband was in hospital over Christmas, being in hospital over the holiday period is particularly disruptive and upsetting. I was very disappointed to hear of your experience on Christmas day and that we did not meet your expectations. Our catering staff are a key component of our Christmas celebration activity and I know they had all dressed for the occasion. We offered traditional Christmas lunch for patients ….turkey, ham and Christmas pudding plus options of salad or sandwiches or vegetarian. In addition we provided Christmas napkins on the trays for all meals, a small Christmas card with a chocolate on the breakfast tray, morning tea with fruit mince pies, afternoon tea with a short bread Christmas tree and a Christmas cake for supper.

Unfortunately this does not seem to resonate with your experience. Sometimes patients are placed on special diets and have more limited choice of menu options – I’m not sure if this was the case with your husband, but either way, I do apologise again that we did not meet your expectations.

Thank you for the positive comments about our nurses, we are fortunate to have such dedicated staff and I will ensure your feedback is provided to them.

I hope your husband is recovering well.

Kind regards

Dr Lesley Bennett
