"Inappropriate wait time"

About: Maroondah Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My husband presented to Maroondah ED recently with sudden onset of blurred/reduced vision in one eye. After a five hour wait he had an ultrasound on his eye and was told to present to the Eye and Ear Hospital for a potentially torn retina...a serious eye emergency that could cause blindness. I used to work as a nurse in ED and I know that anyone who presents with sudden distorted vision should be a Category 2 and seen within ten minutes. I am not sure where the nursing staff are getting their training from, but his five hour wait could now lead to blindness. Disgraceful.

Dear authenticpg53

Thank you again for sharing your experience when in your husband attended the Emergency Department at Maroondah Hospital. I would like to apologise for the time he waited to be seen.

I believe the right thing to do would be to undertake an investigation regarding the triage category allocation and also the time spent waiting. In order to progress, could I please ask if you (or your husband) make contact with the Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience privately either via email at feedback@easternhealth.org.au or through calling 1800 EASTERN.

Should you wish not to make contact I completely understand but hope we hear from you.

Thank you again

Kind regards

David
