"Appointment at Mesh Clinic"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital

(as the patient),

I had an appointment at the KEMH Mesh Clinic. Unfortunately I was awake all night due to stomach cramps and as I hadn’t slept all night and I believed it was too dangerous to drive the 45 kms there and back again, I phoned at the earliest time possible (8am) to cancel. I also still had stomach pain and felt unwell. I spoke to the Coordinator and she informed me that if I didn’t attend today, I would not be seen again until August and she also mentioned that there were 10 cancellations that day. I realise that there is a long waiting list and appreciated that they are busy but told her that I was feeling awful and could not attend. A similar illness had prevented me from attending another appointment approximately a year ago.

I was concerned given the number of cancellations and the waiting list for women to attend the Mesh Clinic, so I asked if they could give my appointment to someone else, but I was told, No, that won’t happen.

Is it possible to establish a reserve list so that if an appointment occurs at short notice, women can be contacted and offered it. I know that if I was offered an appointment two hours prior to it being available I would be likely to accept it. I have spoken to women who have been on the waiting list for some time who would also be willing to go at short notice.

I was sorry to miss my urology appointment, as I have found Dr Nocholas to be helpful and there were several issues that I hoped to discuss with him. However, I appreciate that I won’t be seen now until August.

Dear Enmeshed

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns regarding your recent experience with our Mesh Clinic.

The Women and Newborn Health Service strives to provide intervention in a timely manner to all patients, and I am sorry that we were not able to accommodate you with a rescheduled appointment at an earlier date, or to allocate your cancelled appointment time to another patient.

Thank you for your suggestion of a reserve list for appointment cancellations. It is normal process that patients waiting on the list will be phoned to see if they are able to attend at short notice whenever we have cancellations. Due to staffing shortages on the day of your scheduled appointment, staff were unable to contact the wait list. We apologise if this was not made clearer to you. This issue will be discussed with the Directors of the Mesh Clinic to maximise the clinic’s service to our patients.

The Women and Newborn Health Service strives provide excellence in healthcare for women, infants and their families and I would like to thank you once again for bringing this matter to my attention.

Kind regards

Jodi Graham
