I was travelling in one of the pink lifts of the Perth Children's Hospital at 7.30 in the morning and it came to a sudden jerking halt. Lights went out and flickered on and off for about 30 seconds to a minute and I pressed the emergency call button. Notably the instruction that you need to press the call button for 5 seconds to activate is not visible when the lights are off in the lift, however I was aware of this fact being a regular traveller in the lifts.
The respondent merely stated that the hospital was undergoing generator testing that could affect the lift and that it should be back on soon. It returned to functionality relatively quickly. My perception was that he viewed the failure as an inconvenience, whereas I perceive this to be a potential risk to lift users.
My concern is that the abrupt stop is dangerous especially for those who are unsteady on their feet and have babes in arms and I found it somewhat frightening initially. I feel that if it is anticipated that generator testing will disrupt lifts in this way it should be carried out overnight at the hospital's quietest period and there should be an announcement or lifts temporarily closed. Further, the instruction that the emergency call button needs to be pressed for 5 seconds, in my opinion should be illuminated along with the emergency call button itself in the event of light failures.
