"Not having a fridge"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

Up until a few years ago, all Cystic Fibrosis (CF) inpatients at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital had access to a small bar fridge in our rooms. These fridges have since been removed and we are the only CF hospital that no longer provides a personal fridge for inpatients.

These fridges are crucial for CF inpatients as we need to maintain weight and we are generally in hospital for 2 weeks at a time and being able to bring in food and keep it refrigerated is a must, as well as making life a lot easier by not having to outsource food all the time which ends up costing a fortune!

Bring back our fridges!

And make our in-house WiFi better. Some rooms aren’t even able to get a connection because the signal is so low!

Dear CrankyCF

Thank you very much for raising your concern about the lack of fridges available for Cystic Fibrosis patients to use. We have recently received other stories similar to yours and we are getting a group together to talk about whether there is anything further we can do. We will feedback to everyone that posted stories on Patient Opinion after that meeting.

The fridges which were available for CF patients were removed mostly due to concerns around safety issues relating to food storage. Changes to Food Safety guidelines and Infection Control policies meant that it was not possible to comply with the requirements for the management and monitoring of these fridges. There were also some challenges around the space in the rooms and making sure that staff were able to provide care safely.

As a result of your passion we will call a group together to revisit this, and I am hoping we could have some members of the CF community to be part of the problem solving strategy.

Kind regards,

Janet Zagari
