"Safety and security of visitors and staff"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

I attended the Sydney Eye Hospital with my elderly mother (who is wheelchair bound) for her regular checkup.

On arrival, we had difficulties entering the facility as the regular doors were closed, but a sign indicated that the entrance was now from the Eastern side in the courtyard where the Robert Brough Fountain is located.

Being on crutches it was an additional burden, but fortunately someone inside noticed we were standing at the entrance and opened the main double opening doors for us.

The staff explained that the door was not to be used anymore by order from upstairs.

Although now retired, I was a QA (Quality Assurance) and Safety Expert with company and this situation looks like a major safety issue.

I requested to speak to management to have the main entrance doors opened immediately as the waiting room was full of people and the situation in the event of an emergency would be hazardous.

I eventually spoke over the phone and then later in person with a staff member who took note of my concerns and requested I use this method to bring this serious breach of Occupational Health & Safety to the attention of management.

In no way do I wish to cause any issues to the excellent staff who have looked after my aging mother, but am extremely concerned about the safety of all visitors and staff.

I would appreciate if someone could review this decision to keep the main doors closed (I am told because it is disruptive to Executive Management who work on the upper floors) and reverse the decision.

Dear Concerned Safety Expert

Thank you for bringing your safety concerns to our attention. Staff and patient safety is very important to us here at Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital. The entry doors that you are referring too are one of the entry points to the clinics. We are continuously reviewing the flows of the clinic to optimise the available space and patient experience. The manager of the department recently highlighted the issue and associated patient feedback, prior to your story on Patient Opinion and we are working on a solution to alter the flow enabling easier access through the door. Please be assured that the doors can be opened at any time to allow access both in and out of the clinic. Your feedback is valuable and your concerns for our staff and patients is appreciated. I will work with the manager to review the situation.

Again thank you for concerns for our patients and staff safety.

Kind regards

Jennie

Update posted by Concerned Safety Expert (a parent/guardian)

Thank you kindly for your response Jennie.

As I'm sure you're aware, the doors are broken with only the left side (looking outwards) opening automatically. The other door needing to be manually pushed open.

For the dutiful staff this seemed a major inconvenience as I watched them jump up from the reception desk and walk around countless times during my visit.

Considering an emergency situation, people tend to exit via the most straightforward, known, logical exit. In this case it would be through those doors, and not out to the left towards the convoluted fountain exit.

Anyway, just wanted to leave my two cents worth in the hope it brings about some change. Only because it really did seem to cause both visitors and staff a lot of grief.

Thank you!
