"We are forever grateful for the care my husband received."

About: Bendigo Health Kerang District Health Royal Melbourne Hospital

(as a relative),

My husband was taken by ambulance from home a few months ago. An accurate diagnosis was made by staff (Chloe and Judy) at Kerang District Health and he was soon in a helicopter to Bendigo Health for an operation to repair an 8cm aortic rupture. Without the prompt and correct diagnosis I would most likely not have my husband with me now. He was transferred to Royal Melbourne Hospital for vascular surgery to save his left leg. A further operation was performed the next day as his colon was dying and he now has a stoma. There were 5 (or 6? ) operations in all. The care he received was wonderful. We are forever grateful. Regards.

Dear moongh44,

Thank you for sharing your story and I am so glad that your husband is recovering. Your story is an example of how many parts of the health system can come together and produce an outstanding result. As you identified, a correct diagnosis in a small regional hospital prompted a rapid Ambulance Victoria transfer to Bendigo for life saving surgery and finally a transfer to the Royal Melbourne where our surgeons were able to save your husband's leg and bowel. Your husband's experience reminds us all how fortunate we are to have a world class health system in Victoria. Thank you for your feedback, I will certainly pass this on to our surgical team.

Regards,

Prof George Braitberg

Dear moongh44,

I was so pleased to hear about your husbands recovery when you called in the other day, and to share with the rest of the team here at Kerang his progress. On the morning when he came in, I recall having a discussion with another staff member about the level of fitness that he has maintained and how this made such a difference to his situation, even while he was so unwell. It is a good reminder to us all to maintain our health and fitness. Thank you for taking the time to write your husbands story, and as Professor Braitberg has pointed out we are lucky indeed to live in a state where healthcare of this standard can be provided.

Kind Regards

Chloe

Dear moongh44,

Just a short note to explain that as my role in the hospital as the Director of Clinical Services I attend Board meetings, and this month I am taking your story as an orientation for our new board members as an example of how we welcome and encourage stories within Kerang District Health through this portal, and how our staff and our community are interested in other peoples experience in health care.

At a Patient Opinion education session in Melbourne yesterday I also brought forward your story as one full of learning for our staff. The staff learnt that they are one part of a persons healthcare journey, and that small things can make a big difference. They learnt that people from other health services read about patients experience here at Kerang and can find that helpful. They learnt that our health system is something to be proud of.

Again, thank you for your story, it is the gift that keeps on giving!

Kind Regards

Chloe Keogh

Director of Clinical Services
