"Poor experience with patient transport"

About: Halls Creek Hospital Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - WACHS Kimberley

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

When my family member wanted to go Perth to visit their spouse on dialysis, PATS wouldn't let them. Their spouse wanted my family member there, my family member's spouse was frightened on their own down there.

The hospital is alright, really good here, they give you the right information and tablets.

Dear HC Stories

Thank-you for sharing your story with us. I am saddened to hear about the situation involving your family member’s spouse. I understand that it can be overwhelming for people who go to the city for treatment and I am very sorry to hear that your family member was frightened while receiving care in Perth.

In relation to PATS, the guidelines are very specific in relation to eligibility for escorts. An escort needs to be considered medically necessary by the treating doctor or treating specialist to be approved. In your family member’s situation, it is possible that the request for PATS was declined because it was not requested by your family member’s doctor. Although I understand that there is an opportunity for patients to seek approval of an escort as an exceptional circumstance.

It is lovely to hear that overall, you are happy with the hospital. I will make sure that your feedback is shared with our staff.

Kind regards
