My Mum was born in Bridgetown, and all but a few years in her late teens, lived all of her 82 years there. She lived a good life but was diagnosed with a terminal lung condition mid 2018. Dad cared for her at home for as long as he was able, but when that wasn’t possible, she went to Bridgetown Hospital.
I can not speak highly enough of the care she received. Doctors were responsive to her needs, always with a focus of keeping her comfortable. The nursing staff were absolutely awesome - so attentive, professional and personable - with great attention to the little things that mattered to Mum. Support staff stayed a little longer than they probably should have for a chat - it would only take Mum a few minutes to work out who the staff member was related to or some family connection.
Mum chose to pass quietly in the night - but we didn’t feel she was alone. Whilst in the hospital - we all felt she was surrounded by friends.
If the purpose of a small regional hospital is to provide care to local community members - Bridgetown Hospital succeeded with flying colours. I can’t think of a better tribute to a local than being able to end your days in your own community, being cared for by staff who genuinely cared for her. I am humbled by their care and support.
