Recently, early in the morning we woke to our child not breathing in their cot. Blue and limp. I pulled my child out of their cot and commenced CPR while ringing the ambulance, my child eventually came through. We got taken by ambulance to Busselton Hospital, they rang Bunbury Hospital due to no paediatrician being at Busselton Hospital. We got told to drive up to Bunbury Hospital. We got there and waiting in the Emergency Department for a paediatrician who admitted us for ‘observation’. The night we were in our child was not monitored, we were left in the room with our child connected to no monitoring devices. We were discharged the next morning, no tests done, absolutely nothing done. Their response, your child smiled, they must be fine. No, my child is a typical baby.
Fast forward to a week later, our child stopped breathing 3 more times since, and we ended back up at Bunbury Hospital. Once again admitted for ‘monitoring’. Once again no tests done or anything. Our child went completely blue and stopped breathing in their cot there at the hospital, we pressed every button and no one came for 5 minutes, luckily my spouse and I were sitting there. The paediatrician came in and told us to chill, sometimes they are busy and don’t have time for everybody, and next time we shouldn’t touch our child, and just wait for them to come. We feel the paediatrician then proceeded to yell at us and say, even though we are the child's parents we should never have performed CPR (we have both done approved first aid courses) and we should of filmed our child so they could see it. We proceeded to discharge our child for our child's own safety and will be driving the 2.5 hour trip to Perth next time.
I feel absolutely disgusted that my baby had no test done and a paediatrician will give advice like that. Unfortunately we feel a parent will listen to this advice and it could result in a child passing.
Please do not film your child not breathing, please do CPR and act quickly.
