"Grandparent's passing"

About: Esperance Health Campus

(as a relative),

My grandparent's passing was very sudden, my grandparent was a relatively well person - had all their faculties about them and was shopping before being admitted to hospital earlier this month, we had the news broken to us the next day that my grandparent was terminal and the lymphoma was spreading quickly, they couldn’t eat or drink and was taken off all IVs that day.

When I asked a particular nurse if my grandparent could have their fluids back the nurse replied, why would I prolong their death? The nurse said this in front of the whole family and my grandparent. I feel the nurse's bedside manner was appalling and they also said we should take my grandparent home to die, to be clear my other grandparent is 80 and frail and my sick grandparent's wheelchair wouldn’t even fit in the unit!

I feel this nurse is a horrible being with no compassion and should not be allowed near dying patients and their families. This will live in the memory of my grandparent with all of us and especially my other grandparent, that we were cruel to prolong the life of a person that was fine 5 days prior to this.

Shame on the nurse and may nobody treat your loved grandparents in the way you treated mine!

Dear orangehy66

I would firstly like to offer you my sincere condolences on the passing of your grandparent at what must be a very emotional time for you and your family. Your story was difficult to read and I am deeply saddened and very sorry to hear that one of our staff behaved this way. I would like to assure you that this behaviour is not in line with the values of our health service and that we will speak to the staff member involved to ensure that this does not happen to another patient and their family.

We would really appreciate being able to speak to you about what happened to you and your family. If you are happy to do this, please contact Carla Jones who is the Director of Nursing at the Esperance Health Campus. Carla can be contacted on 9079 8161.

I would like to thank you for sharing your story with us. When we listen and learn from our patients and their families we can improve the care that we provide.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
