"Insensitive nurse to new parents"

About: Leonora Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

My baby fell ill recently, and as they are extremely young I was not taking any chances due to the horrific flu season we have happening in Australia now. Due to living rural, I was scared for my baby as they could barely breathe.

I rushed them in, with tears streaming down myself as again, I was worried about them. As per usual- a few nurses came through to check on them.

One nurse who has seen me before proceeded to say to me that my baby didn't look sick and was now fine. This comment by this nurse is extremely insensitive due to how fast babies this young can deteriorate.

Our doctor then saw us and my baby had a temperature of 38 degrees, was full of mucus and is fighting a common cold. As a new parent, situations like these are scary. If everybody who walked into that hospital was turned away because they don’t look sick, we would have a problem. These comments should not be tolerated and we are not happy.

Overall we love the doctors and nurses in our small local hospital but this nurse comes across as nasty and not very sympathetic towards new parents with a very sick baby.

Dear yankeest75

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience at Leonora Hospital with us.

Having a baby that is unwell is a very stressful experience and I do apologise that your experience was not what we expect from our staff.

Our expectation is for staff to remain focussed and appropriate in their communication and the Manager of Leonora Hospital will engage with all nursing staff to reinforce the importance of being respectful and empathetic with all patients and their families.

I am very pleased to hear that overall you are happy with the doctors and nurses at the hospital. We are very proud of our team and the great work that they do each and every day.

I hope that your little one is recovering well and that you will be comfortable coming back to our hospital again.

If you would like to talk about your experience, please feel free to contact Denese Mahoney. Denese is the Director of Nursing at the hospital and can be reached on 08 9080 4300.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your story. It is through stories such as yours that we can learn from and improve the experiences of other patients and their families.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
