"Appreciation for good quality bedside nursing care"

About: Perth Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

We recently attended the Day Treatment Unit at Perth Children's Hospital. From admission to discharge our primary nurse, Gabby made us feel safe. Gabby introduced herself and established rapport with both my child and I. She undertook her initial assessment whilst explaining key information on admission, including the process to escalate care by the guardian in this hospital.

Throughout our stay she was recording observations, documentation, and communicating what was happening and what could happen next.  At no point did I feel like I was left with unanswered questions, or wondering what was next.

At one stage my child vomited and when I looked up there were nurses everywhere to assist, support and intervene if things progressed.  Whilst those who responded were not busy with other patients at the time, it did show their situational awareness of activities within the unit.

Previously when asked what my child wanted to be when they 'grow up' the answer would be a writer, teacher, zoo keeper and vet.  Following this visit, my child has now included a nurse.  This is a reflection of the positive experience had on this day.

Dear Kc,

Thank you for this wonderful feedback from your child’s visit to PCH, which will give our staff an extra spring in their step. Our staff aim to provide outstanding care to all our patients and their families, in line with our core values of respect, compassion, excellence, collaboration, accountability and equity. I am delighted this has been your experience, to the point where your child has added nursing to their list of future careers. I will ensure your feedback is passed on to the team. Should you also like to consider nominating Gabby or any of the DTU team members for a Stars of CAHS staff excellence award, please visit https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/About-us/Child-and-Adolescent-Health-Service/About/Stars-of-CAHS-Awards.

Kind regards
Dr Victor Cheng
