"Cancelled surgery at the very end of the day"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Day Medicine Procedures, Day Stay & Short Stay Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I had a hand injury on recently and attended the Emergency Department at Rockingham Hospital. The doctor would not stitch up the wound and referred me to the Fiona Stanley hand surgeons.

I was told to be in the transit lounge at 7:00 am on the Monday. It doesn’t open till 8:00 am. I should have been told to attend the Day Surgery Unit. I attended the Day Surgery Unit just after 8:00 am and got admitted. At 4:30 pm my surgery was cancelled due to being short-staffed. By this time I was in the theatre holding bay and had not had any food or water since 9:00 pm the night before. My wound was not bandaged for most of the day.

I now have to go to another hospital to have the surgery. I am not impressed with this situation and am concerned I may get an infection and now the healing process is delayed due to not being stitched up on the day of the injury.

Dear waterxq47,

Thank you for sharing your concerns on Patient Opinion.

Cancellations on the day of surgery, unfortunately, can occur for a variety of reasons. I am unable to accurately make comment on the rationale for your cancellation other than to convey my apologies for the impact that this would have had on your health and wellbeing. The Medical staff in charge of your care would have clinically determined the safety of the decision not to operate that day, and I apologise if this was not sufficiently conveyed to you. I would like to investigate the concerns you have raised further so we can review the care you received. I encourage you to please contact us on 6152 4013 and provide further details so we can investigate fully.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty

Executive Director

Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital’s Group.

Dear waterxq47,

I am sorry to hear that your treatment was delayed.

Rockingham General Hospital Emergency Department is able to suture simple injuries. However, if there are concerns about damage to tendons, nerves, blood vessels or joint spaces a specialist repair may be required and a referral is made to a hand specialist.

Thank you for sharing your concerns on Patient Opinion. We will liaise with Fiona Stanley Hospital to identify if any processes could be improved.

Kind regards,

Kath Smith
