My toddler had an accident in the early hours of the morning of the weekend recently. They hit their head on the car door, approx at the temple.
We immediately took our toddler to the Emergency Department at Box Hill Hospital.
We had to wait in a queue to see the triage nurse, who had someone who was describing all the doctors they have been seeing at the time. I felt this person should not have been in the Emergency Department as they were already under the care of a doctor who they could have seen that day or on Monday. From what I overheard, this person did not sound like their situation was an emergency. The triage nurse kept listening to this person whilst other patients, who I felt were more distressed, were kept waiting.
Eventually, we saw the triage nurse, who without any apparent diagnosis, said my toddler was fine and that we could get into the express queue.
Well, after 5 hours we eventually saw a doctor who did not even take my child's temperature. They asked us questions and we told them how annoyed we were that we had to wait 5 hours with a distressed toddler to see a doctor. The doctor defended the hospital's actions. However, I believe that they did not have any defense because they were attending to people who I felt did not have an emergency.
I feel that this is not good enough. The Emergency Department should be for emergencies only.
