"Lack of treatment in Emergency Department"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Recently I was scared by a robbery. I was shaken and my heart was beating hard. I went to the Rockingham Emergency Department for my heart pain.

The nurse checked my temperature and said I had a little bit of a temperature, my spouse told the nurse I was shaken. Then the nurse let us wait almost 2 hours, no other patients were waiting outside. My spouse asked when I could get treated. The nurse said they needed to treat more sick people first and we won't wait long. I asked my spouse to take me home because I just wanted to lay down at that moment.

I feel that any complaint will not work from former experience, but I really want to suggest that a doctor should have checked my blood pressure and heart condition then decided my condition. Do they have enough ability to decide my condition from watching? If I am alive then they are correct, if I die, then bad luck. Do the doctors feel bad for me? I still feel heart pain but I not want to move.

Dear Cloud,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I was very sorry to hear that you waited for almost 2 hours. When presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) patients are triaged by an emergency specialty nurse. Triage is the system used to sort when and where patients will be seen in an ED. While all patients in an ED may be experiencing serious illness or injury, those with life-threatening and severe conditions must be treated first.

We conduct regular audits of all triage staff to review their practice and ensure that it is complying with the Australian government standards for triage. If you would like to contact our Consumer Liaison Officers on 9599 4323 to provide the details of the date and time of your presentation we can review the details of your presentation and follow up directly with staff on duty that day.

kind regards

Kath Smith
