"Extended wait times"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as the patient),

I was admitted in FS Hospital following a heart attack which was caused by an unsuccessful resuscitation attempt. I cannot fault the care and compassion that I received. It wasn't until I was discharged to the transit lounge to wait for my discharge summary, medications and medical certificate. I had a 6 plus hour wait to get these things and when I did my med certificate was not with my paperwork. As a nurse, I know all about being busy and waiting times. What concerned me was that the medication I was waiting for was cardiac medication. I was not recovering from a broken limb or head cold. Consequently, I was exhausted and very emotional when collected by my family members.

Dear decemberpm63,

I was glad to hear of the good care that you received at our Hospital, thanks for taking the time to let us know.

The Transit Lounge is a dedicated area that helps us to improve our bed capacity by ensuring patients receive safe and appropriate nursing care in the right environment and at the same time enabling inpatient beds to be ready and waiting for acutely unwell patients.

Transit Lounge staff regularly check on the progress of discharge medications and discharge summaries and they follow up with doctors to ensure that patients are waiting the minimum amount of time possible. Sometime doctors need to await the outcome of certain test or observations to determine if patients are well enough to leave.

Without your specific details I am unable to investigate why your wait in the Transit Lounge was extended. I would be happy to investigate for you. If you wish us to do so please contact us on 6152 4013 with your details and we will look into why this occurred and see if there was anything that we could have done better to reduce the time you spent in the Transit Lounge.

Kind regards

Neil Doverty
