"Pill given to young teenager without parent's knowledge"

About: Bass Coast Health

(as a parent/guardian),

My young teenager saw a doctor about stomach cramps and was given the pill without parental knowledge, consent or discussion.

As a parent, I was horrified that I had to find these in the child's bag, after several weeks of taking the pill. My child had been complaining of feeling unwell recently and their own GP was very concerned about their well being.

Should a young teenager have the knowledge and understanding of what is in their best interests?

Dear rights,

I am sorry that it has taken me so long to reply to your post. I have been waiting for staff to provide me with some insight about any recent interaction.

This is such a complex moral issue and it is a situation that is very much determined by the doctor's assessment of the teenager. It would be really helpful for me to understand some more details to assess the doctor's response.

It would also be really useful to be able to chat to the doctor and look at your daughter's notes. Is there any chance you could call me on my mobile (0472 846 355) so that I can get some further details and properly investigate?

I hope you will call me.

Kind Regards

Jan
