I recently went to the Emergency Department (ED) and was hospitalised for a period of 5 days in the Surgical Ward. During that time, I was diagnosed with a fractured spine even though MRIs and X-rays and everything all came back that there was nothing there.
After about three weeks, I came back to the Hospital because I was in a lot of pain.
I saw a doctor in ED who looked at all my scans and paperwork and said that the paperwork says you have a fractured spine. You are being treated for a fractured spine but your MRI and scans say that you don’t have fractured spine but it is muscle strain. After that, basically the doctor asked me to come back a day later so they can go and talk to Orthopaedics. The doctor went in early to talk to them and they acknowledged they messed up.
I ended up getting told by that doctor that I would need the physio and that I would be contacted within a week. Two weeks later, I still hadn’t been contacted.
In that 3 week period, I had financial difficulties about being off work because I used up my sick pay and holiday pay.
Because I was told I had to be off work for weeks, I had to drop out of my studies and all the money I had paid upfront for the course I don’t get a refund on. Now I’m out of pocket for my studies and behind on my course. I believe that if I had been diagnosed properly in the first place, this wouldn’t have happened and I could have been back at work within half a week. I feel that everyone involved in my care looked at the paperwork but nobody noticed the misdiagnosis.
