"Patient bullying staff and others"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / State Rehabilitation Service Wards A&B, Wards 1A& 2A

(as the patient),

I was recently a patient in Fiona Stanley Hospital State Rehabilitation Centre.

The medical registrar and nurses were excellent in my care, very caring and patient in explaining my condition.

However I witnessed another patient swearing and heralding vulgarities at other patients and staff. This other patient has been misbehaving and very violent to staff, throwing plates and verbally threatening the nurses.

I personally witnessed this patient shouting vulgarities at staff and other patients multiple times. I sincerely hope management acts swiftly to protect the safety of other patients. How is it possible that such dangerous patient behaviour is allowed in a rehabilitation ward abusing staff and other patients? This appears to me to be an upper-management issue that needs to be urgently addressed as the ground staff and other patients are suffering.

Dear rehabilitation perth,

Thank you for sharing your patient story. Thank you also for your kind words towards the medical registrar and nursing staff.

I am sorry to hear of your experience at Fiona Stanley Hospital and that you have witnessed such behaviours from another patient.

It appears to be a situation known to staff in your ward. Senior managerial staff in the State Rehabilitation Service (SRS) are in constant liaison with ward teams to support both them and the patients under their care. We take the duty of care for all our patients seriously and prioritise safety. If you would like to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service with more information (on 6152 4013 or email fshfeedback@health.wa.gov.au) then I will ensure that this matter is being attended as a priority. SRS Senior Managerial staff will be available to speak with you about your concerns.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty

Executive Director
