"Maternity Ward"

About: Joondalup Health Campus

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my child at Joondalup Health Campus two years ago.

Overall, I experienced excellent care by the midwives and doctors during my stay. Especially my midwife Justine, she was lovely and very supportive during the birth.

I was induced as I was 41+1 weeks. While I was being monitored on the ward, I spoke to one of the nurses who came to check in every 30 minutes or so, that I was experiencing sharp pains quite frequently. The nurse dismissed this and advised I was just having tightenings. As labour progressed into the night, my partner was sent home (as it was after visiting hours). I was rarely checked during the night.

It wasn't until I went out to the Nurses Station to ask for pain relief did they provide me with a morphine injection. I tried to get some rest as it was very late during this. About three hours later, I went out to the Nurses Station to tell them I couldn't take the pain anymore and requested to be checked over. The midwife then called me a cry baby and said I haven't even experienced any pain yet. This obviously made me feel more distressed as this was my first labour and didn't know what to expect.

The midwife proceeded to take me over into the Birthing Suite where I was checked by one of the midwives there. They checked me as requested and advised me I was 9cm dilated and ready to go! The birth was relatively quick that my partner almost missed the birth.

If I had left it a little longer before approaching the midwife, I believe I could've given birth inside my room.

After the birth, as I mentioned before, I had nothing but exceptional care, I just wanted to provide feedback as I felt quite neglected and alone during my labour.

Dear nuthatchcf96,

Thank you for sharing your birth story with us. We are sorry that the midwife you mentioned was not sympathetic to your pain requirements, and that you left our hospital feeling dissatisfied with a component of the care you received. To reduce the likelihood of this happening to someone else, we would like to communicate further with you.

If you would like to take up this opportunity please call Sarah or Alison (our Consumer Liaison Officers). Sarah and Alison can be contacted directly by telephone on 9400 9672 during office hours or alternatively via email at consumerliaison.jhc@ramsayhealth.com.au

Kind regards

Brendon Burns

Deputy Director of Clinical Services
