"A recent trip to the Emergency Department"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My spouse was called by their Oncologist on a weekend in the evening recently. They were asked to go to the Emergency Department (ED) at Bunbury Regional Hospital as recent blood tests had detected an infection and they would need to be admitted to hospital.

We arrived at the ED an hour later and were seen by the Triage Nurse fairly promptly.  We were sent to the "Fast Track" section, where we sat for 2 hours.

During this time several people attended the ED, seemingly under the influence of various substances, and it was not a pleasant experience.  It also felt quite obvious that the staff were relatively safe behind barriers but any patients awaiting treatment were stuck in the waiting area with some characters I felt were fairly unsavoury.  It was worse in the "Fast Track" section as there is no dual egress to escape and you are in the way of anyone trying to access the toilets.

After 2 hours we decided to leave and advised the Reception staff.  The Triage Nurse was very apologetic and requested we stay and said we would be seen immediately.  Once we were in the assessment area within the ED, the treatment was very good.

Of note, however, was the fact that my spouse's blood tests had been carried out at the pathology lab at another hospital and these were not available to the BRH ED.

Dear aquariuszs45,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback via Patient Opinion on your recent visit to the Bunbury Emergency.

It is disappointing to hear you waited in the Fast Track waiting area for 2 hours.

We have recently implemented a Waiting Room Liaison Nurse role during the hours of high patient presentation rates to improve the communication, assessment and support for patients waiting for medical assessment.

We anticipate this role will continue to develop and add significant value to the service provided and a sense of reassurance to patients and families in a stressful situation.

While we cannot always access blood test results from other laboratories we usually would be sent a copy of the results from the referring GP or district hospital.

We would be very grateful if you could call our Customer Liaison Officer on 97221521 so we can investigate the specific details relating to your presentation and your feedback in more detail.

Kind Regards

Denise Clement
