I am an older resident of Melbourne, Victoria who recently travelled to Broome, W. A. for a holiday. Within days of arrival, I developed early symptoms of a lung infection which I felt was not handled well by a local clinic, resulting in my being admitted to the Broome Hospital with advanced pneumonia, including a high temperature and low blood oxygen levels.
I was transferred immediately to their High Dependency unit - essentially Intensive Care - where I remained for nearly four days. The performance of the medical staff was truly amazing in stabilizing my temperature and increasing my blood oxygen level, which by the time of admission had fallen to a dangerously low level.
Obviously, I was extremely worried about the situation as I was having great difficulty in breathing and was aware that I was in a very remote part of the country.
I wish to specifically nominate the following doctors - Drs. Sasha, David and Alex, and nursing staff including Sara, Eliza, Jo, Katie, Jess, Gemma, Renee, Emma and Melissa.
All contributed magnificently in aiding my recovery through their diligent care and cheerfulness. As a general comment I am a private patient but now have the utmost respect for the public health system after this event.
