"Friendly volunteer staff"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I had to spend some time in ED recently, nothing stressful just a lot of sitting around involved as I was low priority.

It was really refreshing to be visited by a couple of friendly women (volunteers) just saying hello with a bit of friendly chat and checking I was OK while I waited. I didn't mind waiting but having someone come and say hello helped break the boredom and reassured me that even though the doctor and nurses were busy, someone else was there looking out for the patients.

Dear patientwaiting,

Thank you for sharing your Albany Health Campus ED experience on Patient Opinion. Waiting in ED as a low priority requires patience and understanding and I’m delighted that our ED volunteers broke your boredom and looked out for you.

Our ED volunteers add so much value to our team, many coming from a health care background. Our volunteers can help reassure patient and families, through conversation and offering activities to help pass the time. This is a relatively new initiative for ED, although Albany Health Campus has operated a number of volunteer programs for some time - including the dementia, meet and greet and cancer services volunteers – all of which receive ongoing support and training.

Thank you for your appreciation and acknowledgement of their efforts and this great service at Albany Health Campus.

Best wishes

Juan Clark
