"Delay in transporting child in pain"

About: Dandenong Hospital Wonthaggi Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My young grandchild was ambulanced to the ER from school with a badly broken and displaced arm. They needed to be transferred to another hospital for surgery. 6hrs later my grandchild is still in ER at Wonthaggi, waiting for a bed in Dandenong Hospital. They are in a lot of pain and did not eat during this time as they're fasting for the operation. This is not good enough. Pain relief is not working and my grandchild is in a substantial amount of pain.

11pm that night they said there wasn't a bed so we woke my grandchild up to give them something to eat as they then had to fast again at midnight. The next day they told us we should've just driven there ourselves as the nurse was surprised to see that my grandchild was still there. The nurse then booked an ambulance to take my grandchild to Dandenong Ed.

Why they didn't transfer my grandchild when they first arrived and seen how badly it was broken is beyond me, but to have a little child wait in pain for 24hrs is, I feel, ridiculous. It would have been quicker to drive them to an ER in Melbourne.

Dear nanny22.

Thank you so much for making contact with us to highlight the issues with your grandchild’s care. You will already know that our Operations Director has made contact with your daughter to discuss these issues. I apologise for not getting back to you sooner but wanted to ensure we had spoken with your daughter first.

I completely understand your frustration at us not being able to secure a bed at the tertiary service. We have reminded ED staff to escalate to the Executive on call if beds are not available in the referral health service so that we can help facilitate alternate access.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to make this post.

Kind regards

Jan
