"Maternity ward"

About: Karratha Health Campus

(as a parent/guardian),

Birthing of our first baby, very pleased.

My spouse and I recently had our baby delivered here. Excellent, all the staff here have been great - Cleaners, Orderlies, Ward Nurses, Midwives, Anaesthesiologists, Doctors and Theatre team. Can’t say a  bad thing about the place.

Our only concern is that we feel maybe an extra Midwife on shift would make things a bit safer for newborns and new mums, as when we were there, things were really busy. The Midwives were doing their best to get around everyone but having, we believe, only two on shift and both labour rooms full, mums-to-be queuing up in the examination rooms and unforeseeable delays in getting into the operating theatre seemed to leave them a bit stretched. But a great service to have here in the Pilbara.

Dear Pilbara parent,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at the Karratha Health Campus. It is a pleasure to know that as a result of the dedicated care provided by our team, the birth of your first child was safe and all went smoothly. Thank you also for recognising that the provision of excellent patient care is supported not only by our clinical staff, but also an army of outstanding non-clinical staff. I will be passing on your feedback to the team.

Your concern regarding the Maternity Unit staffing level is understandable. In a particularly busy time recently, the unit delivered 6 babies in less than 36 hours! In order to cope with such instances of increased activity:

- the Maternity Unit is staffed by 2 midwives per shift and if required an available a midwife is placed on call.

- staff from the Inpatient Unit are deployed to support the midwives.

- Surgical Services staff are placed on call to provide support for the Maternity Unit.

As always we are keen to look into the specifics of the instance to which you are referring, and invite you to contact us directly via email on WACHS-Pilbara.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au or on 9144 7630.

Thank you again for your feedback. I wish you and your family all the best.

Yvonne Bagwell
