"Excellent hospital care with minor suggestions"

About: Royal Hospital for Women / Macquarie Ward

(as the patient),

I suffered an early stage miscarriage and had excellent medical care at both emergency and the early pregnancy clinic. The wait times are 4 hours which I had fortunately been warned about. I can’t fault the staff, they have a difficult role.

I would make a recommendation that at reception when they are calling people, that they find a different way to ask if someone is there for early pregnancy or fertility as the reception is shared and I could see when this question is asked at reception and again in front of the busy room, was making some patients uncomfortable in my opinion.

At home, I was added to a mailing list which included a magazine with a family and baby on the cover with the heading 'a happy homecoming' and a letter to request donations which also included stories of successful, albeit difficult, pregnancies and births. At the time of receiving the letter, I was still undergoing tests to confirm a successful miscarriage so I question the appropriateness and timing of sending this sort of communication and the ethics of asking for donations for fertility and pregnancy causes whilst someone is grieving their own loss.

Dear juneht86,

I am sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I can only imagine what a difficult time this must be for you.

Thank you for writing about your positive experience with the medical care here at RHW. However, I also acknowledge that we need to make changes in the way we ask for information from women who attend our emergency pregnancy assessment service to ensure all women feel able to discuss the reason for their attendance with privacy.

Your feedback regarding the inappropriate forwarding of a magazine and a request for donations has also been discussed with the team, and whilst I appreciate it is too late to affect the care for you, it is important that we learn from your experience in order to improve our standards for others and ensure we make changes to prevent this happening in the future. I would like to thank you most sincerely for taking the time to bring your concerns to my attention, especially during this most difficult time.

Kind regards

Helen McCarthy
