"Pregnancy bleeding and cramping"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to the emergency department with bleeding and cramps (I was 6 weeks pregnant). It took me an hour to get through to just sit in a waiting room for 3 hours. The doctor drew some blood and told me they were testing my rhesus and not my beta-HCG because they told me it wasn’t relevant. The doctor also told me I would not receive an ultrasound, which I believe I should have received. I miscarried a few days later.

I understand that the doctors can’t do anything to stop a miscarriage but I still believe I should have received an ultrasound.

I had a scan at the gynaecology clinic a few days later and they told me I had miscarried. The doctor I spoke to after the exam was, I felt, incredibly uncaring and had terrible bedside manner. I was visibly upset and I received no empathy from them whatsoever.

I am incredibly disappointed with this hospital and feel I will never go there again.

Dear lacertajt59,

Having a miscarriage is a terrible event for any woman to experience in their life and I am very sorry for your loss.

I am also very disappointed to hear about your treatment in the acute gynaecology clinic where you felt that your doctor was not empathetic.

We will be sharing your experience with the medical staff. Your experience provides an opportunity for our staff to reflect on their practice, particularly when a woman receives the distressing news of a miscarriage.

It would be appreciated if you would get in touch with us and provide more details so we can investigate your experience thoroughly. Would you, please contact FSH Patient Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013.

Again, I am very sorry for your loss and for your experience.

Kind regards,

Paul Mark
