"Dressing my elderly parent's wound"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

I found this to be mostly good service until the nurse applied dressing on my elderly parent's wound. I thought it was odd that the nurse stuck the adhesive on my parent's torn skin but they seemed competent enough and I believe they were following instructions of the consultant and registrar.

Unfortunately the nurse was mistaken and now my parent has an infection.

I believe you should always ask questions, especially if you sense something is wrong. Thank goodness it was a relatively minor injury. I am keeping track of the progress.

Dear jupiterns43,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, I’m sorry to hear of your parent’s experience.

It is normal practice for all wounds to be assessed, cleaned if required and an appropriate dressing applied. If a skin tear is present, the skin is re-aligned without stretching the flap. It would not be normal practice to stick a dressing to broken skin therefore I encourage you to contact the hospital's Consumer Liaison team on 9599 4632 so that we can investigate further.

I hope that your parent’s health issues are resolving.

Kind regards,

Kath Smith
