"Mistreatment from another patient"

About: St George Hospital

(as the patient),

I was recently at St George Hospital, Kogarah. I was an inpatient on Level 5 receiving medical treatment. An unknown patient was moved into the bed directly opposite to me and went to sleep shortly after that.

About an hour and a half later, I was woken up by that patient yelling. The nurse came in and said to them that they can't be yelling like that. This patient raised their voice and said that the nurses shouldn't have moved them next to someone who snores like a horse!

I felt frozen in fear - I thought if I go back to sleep, I will snore and will this person physically hurt me?

I pressed the call button for a nurse to come and I said that I just got woken up by a person yelling and complaining loudly that I was snoring. I asked the nurse what they were going to do about this situation. The nurse said they would speak to the patient. I heard no conversation between the nurse and the patient.

A short while later, I pressed the call button again since I didn’t hear back from the previous nurse. A different nurse came in and I repeated my story- that I was woken up by a patient yelling loudly and complaining about my snoring. I said I have done nothing wrong and this person's behaviour, that I feel was violent, is causing me to feel scared. I asked this nurse how they were going to manage this.

The nurse's response was to ask if I would like to move to another room. I said yes.

As the two nurses opened up the curtain to assist me to move, the patient sat up in their bed & stared at me for several moments and I stared back at them. Then the patient yelled out - good, at least I won’t be woken up by someone snoring like a horse.

I felt angry at this point because I feel as though I got punished for snoring and this patient got rewarded for, what I felt was their violent behaviour towards me.

I was moved into another room.

Although the nurses attempted to calm the situation down, I believe they made an error in judgement by moving me. I believe the other patient should have been confronted for their bad behaviour and should have been cautioned and either moved or discharged.
