"Women's Care"

About: Bendigo Hospital

(as a carer),

The level of care provided was superb. Every staff member we encountered was extremely caring, competent and professional.

There was one small thing about the room that I feel could be easily changed to better suit some patients. My spouse was staying overnight in the Women's Unit. It would seem, in my opinion, there are two reasons why someone would stay in this unit. Either they have just had a baby or they have just lost a baby/pregnancy/miscarriage  etc.

It makes total sense medically that patients from both scenarios would be in the same ward as I believe both types of patients require the same specialists and care etc. However, from an emotional perspective the patients are really completely opposite situations.

It seemed that all the rooms had signs in that were focused towards people who have successfully had a baby. I don't mind general posters. I understand it wouldn't be practical to remove them. There was one sign in particular which I felt should be changed depending on who is staying it the room.

The sign that I feel should be changed appears to be a paper sign that sits behind a perspex cover. I believe the sign is used by staff to record the patient's name, the name of the baby, the dietary needs of the mother and the dietary needs of the baby etc. The sign is continually reused as staff record the patient details using a whiteboard marker on the perspex.

In my opinion, ideally this sign would have two templates. One printed on either side of the piece of paper. Depending on the circumstances of the patient the poster should be turned over.

Dear browserbj73,

Thank you for recognising the care you received. I am glad to hear you had a good experience and felt well cared for. The staff are extremely passionate and skilled and it is appreciated that you have taken the time to acknowledge this.

I would also like to thank you for your suggestion for improving our service.

We have forwarded this information to the Women's & Children's Services team for consideration and to see how they can use this idea to make an improvement in the communication boards.

Kind regards

Andrea Floyd
