"Sydney Eye Hospital Emergency Department"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My relative recently presented to the Emergency Department at Sydney Eye Hospital with a worsening infection in their eye despite 2 weeks of antibiotic eye drops prescribed by their general practitioner.  My relative's eye was red inflamed and had discharge, was sensitive to light and by this stage of the infection, was refusing to open the eye due to the pain.

We felt it best to take them to a Specialist Eye Hospital as we were very concerned that with the continuing deterioration that it may affect their eyesight.

We were seen within a short time frame and triage by a caring and competent nurse by the name Leslie and the Nurse manager of the ED Danni. Nurse Leslie was exceptionally knowledgeable in the care of eyes and quickly diagnosed my relative as having a corneal abrasion which she explained had occurred from the infection. She explained that this condition was exceptionally painful and promptly placed a number of anaesthetic eye drops in her eye to take away the pain to very good effect . After performing a series of tests and observations she referred my relative to Dr Truin.

Dr Truin, a specialist fellow in training for ophthalmology, attended to my relative and performed a number of tests. He confidently diagnosed a viral infection of the eye and prescribed a course of antiviral medication as well as some drops to prevent secondary infection and pain relief medication. Dr Truin was exceptional in his care and he displayed kindness and concern for my relative. It was obvious that he had extensive experience and knowledge in ophthalmology and he was professional, caring and extremely supportive of his patient.

We had to take my relative back a week later to the Outpatient Department at Sydney Eye Hospital for follow-up with Dr Tran where he was very happy that the cornea had almost healed and the eye responded well to the treatment he prescribed.

We wish to personally thank the wonderful, caring and professional nurses at the Sydney Eye Hospital and in particular Nurse Danni and Nurse Leslie who were so experienced, knowledgeable and compassionate toward my relative.

A major thank you to Dr Tran whose expert knowledge and skill in ophthalmology medicine was greatly appreciated by my family.
