"Poor service"

About: Broome Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My young child had a hard fall playing with their older sibling, we didn’t see the fall but my child was in a lot of discomfort all night. The next day my spouse and I went to the Broome Hospital, after seeing the doctor (they spent no longer then a few minutes), they stated that my child may have some bruising on their shoulder region and dismissed us.

A few days later and a little more discomfort from our child, we went to our private GP and requested a X-ray at the Broome Hospital. The X-ray discovered a broken arm (green stick)! We are extremely disappointed that the initial doctor did not pick up on the injury (and discomfort) and the bone could have been further damaged. I feel kids are extremely vulnerable and we are disappointed with the level of service and the doctor's lack of due diligence in my opinion.

Dear silverwarecw44

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Patient Opinion. I apologise that the treatment your child received was not to the standard you expect (and we all expect) from the Emergency Department. I do hope your child's arm is well on the way to healing.

I have spoken to Dr Sascha Sarahov who is the Senior Doctor at Broome Hospital. He would welcome a call from you, to discuss how we cared for your child. This will allow us to identify exactly where things went wrong and make improvements to how we provide care. If you feel comfortable speaking to Dr Sascha, he can be contacted on 9194 2853.

Doctors do make diagnoses about possible broken bones on a clinical basis - especially where there is no obvious serious fracture with deformity, swelling or bruising. This includes not taking x-rays at times, to reduce the radiation young children receive. Having heard about your child's experience, Dr Sascha tells me he and the team will ensure they do better at explaining this often difficult decision making process about having an x-ray to parents/carers.

Thank you again for using Patient Opinion to get in touch, we really appreciate it. Please be assured of our commitment to address the issue you have raised.

Kind regards,

Rachele.

Operations Manager, Broome Hospital.

Dear silverwarecw44,

Thank you for making the time to come and see Dr Sascha and I yesterday.

It was good to talk to you about your child’s experience at Broome Hospital and hear your suggestions on what we can do differently.

As planned, we are going to talk to the Junior Doctors this week and share your story with them as a learning opportunity.

Both Dr Sascha and I appreciated meeting you, being able to listen to your concerns and learn from your experience.

We hope your child is fully recovered very soon,

Kind regards,

Rachele Ferrari
