"Bad maternity experience"

About: Bentley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic & Labour Ward Bentley Hospital / Maternity Ward 2 & Neonatal Nursery

(as the patient),

My spouse had a terrible time at Bentley Hospital during her maternity stay. I felt the midwives treated her with no concern or heart at all. She had an emergency caesarean section and was in pain after surgery.

What I don't understand is why should she be, in my opinion, forced to learn mothercraft in the middle of the night while I feel she should be recuperating. I believe there are many times where it can be done but it seems it has to be at night.

She was crying and they, I believe, still forced her. There was also another midwife who I felt showed no concern for her during her pre-birth.

My spouse wanted to use the restroom but we felt the midwife forced her to do it herself without help. I was helping my spouse but the midwife said she had to do it herself. I felt the midwives who we dealt with were terrible.

Dear outflownd57,

I am very sorry to hear about your spouse’s upsetting experience at Bentley Hospital. Dealing with the arrival of a new baby is always challenging and it is particularly disappointing that your spouse felt unsupported by midwives. It may be helpful to explain that we always encourage new mothers to move around and do as much as they can for themselves after giving birth as this has been shown to assist in their recovery and bonding with their baby. I sincerely apologise if this was not clearly explained to your spouse and for any distress this caused. If you would like us to investigate this matter further, I invite you to please contact the Royal Perth Bentley Group Consumer Engagement Unit on 9224 1637 or by email: RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au

I wish you and your spouse well as you begin this new chapter of your lives.

Dr Lesley Bennett
