"Poor service at emergency"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as other),

My partner was dehydrated on three separate occasions while being pregnant. We are at 15 weeks. After telling staff that certain medications don't work they continued to administer them regardless. Also, we waited in excess of 5+ hours before being admitted all the while my partner is throwing up and becoming dizzy. Once admitted we have to wait hours to finally see a clinician. The last visit was a total of 23 hours in hospital for three bags of fluid and only seeing the clinician twice.

Dear polariscw85,

Thank you for posting on Patient Opinion. I apologise for the length of time your partner waited before being reviewed by clinical staff. I note that you are concerned that your partner was provided with a medication which had previously not helped.

I am advised that there are a limited number of safe medications which can be prescribed during pregnancy. It would have been desirable to have had a discussion with the treating doctor regarding the medication options and associated risk/side effects of the medication available, affording you and your partner the opportunity to understand the course of treatment, ask questions and express concern, at the time. I will ensure that the clinical teams are made aware of your experience and the distress it has caused you and your partner so as to improve the information and discussion regarding treatment, in future.

In order to review the clinical care delivered and medication prescribed, I require your partner’s details and consent to review. I encourage you or your partner to contact the Bunbury Hospital Customer Liaison Officer on 9722 1521 so that a time can be made to ascertain the details and consent required.

Yours sincerely,

Steve Hartwig
