"IUGR pregnancy"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I am absolutely disgusted in the support and service from King Edward.

I have been seeing them for the majority of my pregnancy - 36+3 at the time of writing this story. For the past two weeks, I have had reduced foetal movements and leaking fluid. Over a month ago I lost a plug. I have shared care with my local doctor and them due to the distance in travel.

I have had multiple doctors and sonographers tell me my baby is not growing how they should be and for the past two weeks has sat at the growth of 33 weeks.

I spent 7 hours in the maternity assessment unit, to then be told by a doctor that they see no concern, however, will admit me for a night, to do another CTG in the morning. All because, I believe, rather than ensure my baby is safe they would push it another four days till I sit at the full-term to do what is required to give my baby what they are lacking.

I felt they were dismissive, rude and arrogant in the fact that because they sat in a class to get a degree they know better. I am the one who has carried this child, I know something is not right.

In my opinion, WA needs to bring in Ryan's rule. I am beyond appalled.

Dear Correspondencegj99,

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns regarding your experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS). WNHS strives to provide quality, patient-centred care and I am sorry that this was not the case on this occasion.

I am sorry that you have felt your concerns have not been addressed. There are many factors that are considered by medical staff when determining the best course of treatment for their patients. If there is concern about your baby’s growth, a plan will be implemented including regular scans, monitoring and review either by your healthcare team in the antenatal clinic, including continued weekly or biweekly assessment and review in MFAU. If there are concerns around the growth of your baby, your healthcare team will recommend additional scans for monitoring of growth and baby well-being. This may lead to a decision to deliver your baby early. This should be discussed with you.

Thank you for your suggestion of the implementation of Ryan’s Rule. King Edward Memorial Hospital has implemented the Call and Respond Early (CARE) process, which is a way of allowing our patients, their families or their carers to access further assistance when they feel a health care team has not fully recognised a patient’s changing health condition. We understand that you know yourself best, and patient safety and well-being is an essential part of what we do. Should you feel you need to access this process in the future please speak with your Midwife or Nurse on the ward.

We strive to provide a safe environment where patients and their families are encouraged and feel comfortable to advocate for their health and the health of their unborn child and I am sorry that you felt as though the clinicians caring for you were dismissive, rude and arrogant.

Our service is keen to rectify this situation and would like the opportunity to discuss your concerns regarding your clinical care further. Should you wish to arrange this discussion, please contact the WNHS Consumer Liaison Service (CLS) on 6458 1444.

Kind Regards,

Theresa Marshall
