My adult child had been sick for a few days with an exceptionally sore throat I believe, and notably swollen left neck lymph gland. They phoned me terrified because they woke just after midnight, went to the toilet and all of a sudden couldn’t see, felt nauseous, ears were ringing and felt sweaty. I expected it was a Vasovagal episode because of how big their gland was, but took them to the emergency department (ED) anyway.
I might note that it’s during the COVID19 crisis so it was exceptionally hard to see a GP. Arrived at ED, Dr reviewed my child by looking at their throat, noted a few wee blisters at the back of the throat, touched their gland, I believe they decided it was viral and was a vasovagal episode, they made my child feel faint so I believe they gave them two doses of dexamethasone and sent home. It’s a virus and you’ll get better! No swabs, no bloods, no other physical examination.
My adult child managed to see a GP a few days later, as they were now exceptionally sick and had blisters in their throat mouth and lips. GP took bloods and swab, got results 3 days later. It was in actual fact Strep throat! Now on ABs and slowly getting better. I felt that had the ED doctor taken a wee bit more interest my child would not have had to be as sick as they were for the extra 7 days!!!
