"Presentation to ED"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My adult child had been sick for a few days with an exceptionally sore throat I believe, and notably swollen left neck lymph gland. They phoned me terrified because they woke just after midnight, went to the toilet and all of a sudden couldn’t see, felt nauseous, ears were ringing and felt sweaty. I expected it was a Vasovagal episode because of how big their gland was, but took them to the emergency department (ED) anyway.

I might note that it’s during the COVID19 crisis so it was exceptionally hard to see a GP. Arrived at ED, Dr reviewed my child by looking at their throat, noted a few wee blisters at the back of the throat, touched their gland, I believe they decided it was viral and was a vasovagal episode, they made my child feel faint so I believe they gave them two doses of dexamethasone and sent home. It’s a virus and you’ll get better! No swabs, no bloods, no other physical examination.

My adult child managed to see a GP a few days later, as they were now exceptionally sick and had blisters in their throat mouth and lips. GP took bloods and swab, got results 3 days later. It was in actual fact Strep throat! Now on ABs and slowly getting better. I felt that had the ED doctor taken a wee bit more interest my child would not have had to be as sick as they were for the extra 7 days!!!

Dear melonsn59,

Thank you for getting in touch with us to let us know about your child’s experience at Kalgoorlie Health Campus.

It is clear your child was very unwell and we are sincerely sorry for any additional time that they spent feeling like this in the process of reaching the final diagnosis.

We have provided your feedback to the Emergency Department for their review. The differential diagnosis of such illnesses is difficult. With any preliminary treatment, if symptoms persist this can be added to the picture for further assessment. I am pleased that you did exactly that and went to your General Practitioner.

So that we can investigate the details of the situation and undertake a detailed review, it would be greatly appreciated if you or your child could contact David Bowdidge, who is the Operations Manager at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus. David can be contacted on 9080 5817 or by emailing David.Bowdidge@health.wa.gov.au.

I would like to assure you that our staff are committed to making people feel better and well cared for and I am sorry that this did not occur on this occasion.

Please pass on our best wishes to your child for a speedy recovery.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Tredinnick
